US Open 2017: The First US Open of the Year

Emma Raducanu and Naomi Osaka both lose in US Open first round

The first US Open of the year has opened out well for tennis, so far. We have seen the US Open finals in both men and women, and in both the doubles and mixed pairings have gone well. While the US Open of 2016 started off the year with a shock, the same could not be said for the first US Open of 2017. However, there were a number of notable first round match-ups as both Emma Raducanu and Naomi Osaka were sent packing out of the tournament.

In the women’s group, Angelique Kerber took on Madison Keys and won 2-0. In the men’s mixed doubles group, the US Open duo of John Isner and Jack Sock squared off against the French duo of Gilles Muller and Nicolas Mahut. Sock and Muller won the first set and would be all square heading to a second set tie-break, but Muller made a key rally for a 5-3 set lead. Muller would go on to win in the second set tie-break, and the US Open duo would go on to face the men’s doubles team of David Goffin and John Peers.

In the women’s doubles first round, the first women’s doubles match up saw US Open duo Kerber and Keys battle it out for a comfortable 5-1 victory. In the men’s doubles first round, the match between Isner and Muller would go down to the wire. Isner and Muller will face each other again on Sunday. The top seeded pair of Goffin and Peers also faced each other, with Goffin and Peers winning the first set and then winning the next and the set overall. The US Open duo would not face each other again until the third week of US Open, where Goffin and Peers would face the top seeded duo of Roger Federer and Feliciano López.
