Judi Dench slammed 'The Crown' for portraying the royals as 'nice people'

Judi Dench isn’t a fan of the ‘cruelly unjust’ depiction of the royals on ‘The Crown’ which means she has been furious with the public airing of some of the more salacious claims made about the royals in the third instalment in its new series.

The actress was particularly irate after watching a clip of actress Sarah Badel in the role of Princess Margaret which depicted the monarch being hit in the face with a cup of tea before receiving a dressing down from her husband.

Echoing the actress’ anger, Judi said: “I thought it was just appalling. I didn’t like it. I thought it was cruelly unjust. That’s what I thought. People have to understand, I’m not talking about my personal views. It was a portrayal, they have to be happy with it and recognise they have to respect people’s private lives, which is their own, but it’s also their family, which is their own. We have a very long tradition of presenting Royalty as wonderful people and now we also have to understand that when there is a portrayal of the Queen in a rather negative way it’s just going to upset people who feel that way.”

A series of clips has been released showing the Princess appearing to fall asleep in the face of serious criticism from her husband.

The Royal Family have been subjected to an avalanche of criticism in recent weeks after the third installment of ‘The Crown’ aired, in which viewers are told of the affair between the Duchess of York and Mark Darcy.

Fans of the series complained because of the intimate nature of the relationship portrayed in the drama, which sees Prince Charles’ affair with Camilla Parker Bowles discussed without reference to his wife or daughter.

Judi continued: “I am not saying that there’s anything wrong with people having a private life, but to portray the royals and to say that they are nice people that are just like any other ordinary ordinary people in the normal way is totally wrong. We have a very, very long history of presenting the Royalty as wonderful people and now we also have to understand that when there is a portrayal of the Queen in a rather negative way it’s just going to upset people who feel that way.

“We are not a free people in this country and the Royal Family cannot have any rights for being able to live their private lives, we have a very, very long tradition of presenting the Royalty
